What does a school counselor do?

Picture
The mission of the school counseling program in Cornell is to help students develop the academic, career, and personal/social skills needed for successful learning and productive citizenship. As part of the school counseling curriculum students will have the opportunity to participate in classroom lessons, career courses and individual meetings that focus on many of the following topics:
  • Social Skills
  • Academic Success
  • Personal Safety
  • Alcohol/Drug Awareness and Prevention
  • Healthy Relationships (family, friendships, etc.)
  • Positive Self Image/Character Education
  • Self-Management (stress, depression, and suicide prevention)
  • Career Exploration
  • Diversity
  • Internet/Social Networking Safety
  • Transitions (to the next level of education)

Group Counseling

Groups are open to all students. They will meet at various times during the school day and throughout the school year. Students do not have to be a part of a group, but could be recommended by a staff member to do so. Possible examples of groups may include: Grief Group, Leadership Group, Academic Support Group, Changing Families, Role Models, Bully Proof and Anger Management.
In addition to groups, students often complete surveys for the school counseling office. I may send out surveys to improve my programming. Surveys, such as the Youth Risk Behavior Survey and my counseling office program surveys, provide me with the feedback I need to best serve our students.

A note from Mrs. Schnobrich:

This is my second year at the Cornell School District. I look forward to getting to know all of the students this year! My goal is to provide a comprehensive developmental counseling program that ensures every student achieves the highest possible education in the areas of academic, career, and personal/social development through an ongoing partnership with students, family, school and community.
Please don't hesitate to contact me if there's anything I can help you with!
